The Perfect Anna Maria Island Itinerary: A Tampa Local’s Guide

A view of a modern building with wooden accents and balconies, surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery, under a clear blue sky.

Living in Tampa, I always heard about Anna Maria Island and how it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Crystal clear blue waters, sugar-white sand, and a small beach town that somehow packs in everything you’d want from a coastal getaway. When I learned it was only about an hour away from me, it was a no-brainer. I had to visit — and honestly, I could never say no to a good beach day.

A serene beach scene featuring lounge chairs with white umbrellas on soft sand, overlooking a calm blue sea under a clear sky.

So we drove down to Anna Maria Island and checked into the beautiful Bali Hai Beachfront Resort, right on the water. There’s nothing like waking up to those views of the Gulf — that signature Anna Maria blue stretching out as far as you can see. The resort itself made the trip easy: complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, complimentary bikes (take advantage of these — more on that below), a fabulous on-site dining area, and a great pool and cabana setup for when you want a break from the sand.

After spending a day doing it right, here’s my perfect Anna Maria Island itinerary — the exact day I’d recommend to anyone visiting for the first time.

Where Is Anna Maria Island?

Anna Maria Island is a seven-mile barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast, just west of Bradenton and about an hour’s drive from Tampa or 30–40 minutes from Sarasota. The island is made up of three small communities — Anna Maria (north), Holmes Beach (center), and Bradenton Beach (south) — and it’s known for its old-Florida charm: no high-rises, no chain-restaurant strips, just beach cottages, local restaurants, and some of the clearest water in the state.

Morning: Breakfast at Bali Hai Cafe

Start your day the way we did — with breakfast at the Bali Hai Cafe, right on the resort property. There’s something about eating breakfast steps from the Gulf that sets the tone for the whole day. The cafe has a relaxed, beachy atmosphere, and you can take your time with coffee while you watch the morning light hit the water. No rushing, no driving anywhere — you’re already exactly where you need to be.

Pro tip: Go on the earlier side. You’ll beat the crowd, and you’ll have the whole morning ahead of you for the next stop.

Mid-Morning: Bike Ride to Bean Point Beach

This was my favorite part of the trip. The Bali Hai offers complimentary bikes, and I can’t recommend using them enough. Anna Maria Island is flat, compact, and incredibly bike-friendly — cruising past the pastel beach cottages with the Gulf breeze in your face is the best way to experience the island.

Pedal north to Bean Point Beach, at the very tip of the island where Tampa Bay meets the Gulf of Mexico. Bean Point is the kind of beach that doesn’t feel real: powdery white sand, shallow turquoise water, and far fewer people than the main beaches. It’s tucked behind a residential neighborhood with no big parking lots, which keeps the crowds down — another reason arriving by bike is the move.

A serene beach scene featuring clear blue water, gentle waves lapping at the shore, white sand, and a rocky foreground under a bright sky with scattered clouds.

What to know before you go:

  • There are no facilities at Bean Point (no restrooms, no concessions), so bring water and anything else you’ll need.
  • The sand can get hot by midday — sandals are your friend on the path in.
  • Keep an eye out for dolphins. They’re regulars in the water just offshore.

Afternoon: Beach Chairs, Umbrellas, and Pure Relaxation

After biking back, it’s time to slow everything down. The Bali Hai sets you up with complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas right on their stretch of sand, so all you have to do is walk out and pick your spot. We spent the afternoon floating in that famous clear water, reading under the umbrella, and doing absolutely nothing — which is exactly the point of Anna Maria.

If you hit your beach limit (it happens), the resort’s pool and cabanas are a perfect plan B. Grab a cabana, order something cold, and let the afternoon drift by.

Evening: Dinner at Salt Bar & Table

End the day with dinner at Salt Bar & Table. This was the meal of the trip. If you order one thing, make it the surf & turf — the lobster was genuinely amazing, perfectly cooked, and paired with a steak that held its own. The vibe is upscale-coastal without being stuffy, which fits the island perfectly: you can show up with a little sun on your shoulders and feel right at home.

Pro tip: Make a reservation, especially on weekends or during season (roughly December through April). Time it right and you can catch the sunset before or after dinner — Anna Maria’s west-facing beaches put on a show every single night.

A flat lay of a dining table featuring a variety of dishes: a plate of sliced meat and arugula garnished with balsamic, toasted bread on the side, and two cocktails—one with an orange slice and olives. Additionally, there is a platter of fresh oysters served on ice with various sauces.
